Am I at Risk for Diabetes?
There are many risk factors for diabetes. If you fit into one or several of these lifestyle categories, talk with your doctor about the changes you can make to help keep you from developing diabetes.
- You have family members with diabetes, such as parents or siblings.
- You are overweight.
- You don’t exercise regularly.
- You have high blood pressure.
- You have high cholesterol.
- You are older than 45.
- You are a smoker.
- You have a history of gestational diabetes.
- You have a history of polycystic ovarian syndrome.
- You have a history of vascular (lungs and circulatory system) diseases, such as stroke.
You are at high risk of developing diabetes if you have what is known as pre-diabetes. Pre-diabetes is a condition that occurs when a person's blood glucose levels are higher than normal but not high enough for a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. More than 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association.
Talk to your doctor if you have any of the symptoms of diabetes.
